 Barthes - 5 Narrative Codes According to Ronald Barthes there are 5 codes that can become "signifiers" to help make up the story or narrative. A "signifier" can be identified as an image, sound, symbol or anything that can be used to represent something or a meaning. Hermeneutic (HER) : It's an enigma code or a code that seems vague, leaves the viewer asking questions. Proairetic (ACT) :  It's an action code, Actions that leads to more actions which would keep the plot going. Semantic (SEM) : Flicker codes, they are types of codes that can give a more in depth meaning to the story and characters. Symbolic (SYM) : Symbolic codes, two contrasting signs that best describes tension in the story. Cultural (REF) : Reference codes, It is a type of "signifier" that requires some knowledge from the viewer to understand the information in the story, it is usually popular amongst different cultures.   Todorov's theory Narrative structure theory narrative structure theory by Tzvetan Todorov is  about how the narr atio n in a story is created . In this theory, Todorov mentioned that there are 5 stages that a character will go through; those are Equilibrium, Disruption, Recognition, Attempt of repair and the New equilibrium. In his theory he states that in the begging of every story there is an E quilibrium which is the state of balance where the characters are living there ordinary day to day lives though it is not the most perfect of day to day lives it is still considered "alright". But then as time passes a Disruption  appears, this is the part of the story where conflict might appear and ruin the character's daily life which would make them notice the problem and would prompt them To repair the Disruption.
