Barthes - 5 narrative codes

 Barthes - 5 Narrative Codes

According to Ronald Barthes there are 5 codes that can become "signifiers" to help make up the story or narrative.

A "signifier" can be identified as an image, sound, symbol or anything that can be used to represent something or a meaning.

Hermeneutic (HER) :

It's an enigma code or a code that seems vague, leaves the viewer asking questions.

Proairetic (ACT) :

It's an action code, Actions that leads to more actions which would keep the plot going.

Semantic (SEM) :

Flicker codes, they are types of codes that can give a more in depth meaning to the story and characters.

Symbolic (SYM) :

Symbolic codes, two contrasting signs that best describes tension in the story.

Cultural (REF) :

Reference codes, It is a type of "signifier" that requires some knowledge from the viewer to understand the information in the story, it is usually popular amongst different cultures.

Case Study - Cars

HER:
  • Who is McQueen?
  • What is the piston cup?
  • What happened to Doc Hudson during his career?
  • What happened to Mater's hood?
ACT:

McQueen races > He gets into a pit session with his pit crew but refused to get his tires fixed > he continues the race for about 150 more laps and is far ahead into first place > his tires blows up on the last lap > other racers sees this as an opportunity and speeds up > McQueen "Shimmies" his way to the finish > and the race ends with a 3 way tie.

SEM:
Canyons - to signify that they are near the country side which is peaceful and the exact opposite of a race track.
Engine sounds - signifies that it is a racing movie

SYM:

So McQueen is portrayed to be this "live fast" type of guy and as the story progresses he gets stuck in Radiator Springs where most of the people there like to take things slowly and at a more relaxed pace and as the story progress McQueen realises that fast does not mean good.

REF:

Some people will probably recognize the country music playing in the background such as Life Is A Highway by Rascal Flatts, fans of him might recognize his work and could get the reference.
