The Brief

Disney's media regulation (Self betterment) (Pinocchio)

Image
Q uestion: Analyze the way contemporary media regulation is affected by it's period Media regulation has changed by a lot since the 1940s mostly due to society and it's so ever changing values on what is allowed to shown and what is not. A prime example of this can be seen when comparing the old classic Pinocchio movie made by Disney back in the 1940s with the new real life adaption released in 2022. Since the last 82 years media regulation has changed a lot for starters they much stricter now then they were before and a lot of things has been deemed much more offensive now then it was almost a century ago, these rules can be seen applied in the Pinocchio movie and especially in the "fun land donkey transformation scene" back in the 1940s adaptation there was beer and it was being drank by children which was pretty minor back then but now due to alcohol being a bad influence especially towards children Disney opted to change it into root beer instead in the new 2022...

Indonesian media regulation (Valve apps and PayPal)

Image
Question: Analyze the challenges of regulating media in the digital age. Regulating media can be a tricky thing and this is more evident now with the invention of the internet as because of it media is much harder to regulate properly. An example of this going wrong is the ban of several platforms such as Steam, PayPal, Origin, Yahoo, Epic Games, etc. in Indonesia as they did not met the requirements standards of the Indonesian censorship which was written by Kominfo, the rules states and I quote.  "In line with the rules, companies deemed “Private Electronic System Providers” must register with the government’s database to operate in the country, or otherwise face a nationwide ban. Indonesia gave companies until July 27th to comply and has since banned those that haven’t.".  After the news broke out of these bans people started to bombard Kominfo for their rash decision making as by banning platforms such as PayPal and Steam Kominfo has stripped people of their ab...

Chinese media regulation (Friends)

Image
Question:  Media regulation  'how media regulation has failed everyone' how far do you agree with this statement? Media regulation has failed many people several times over the past few years, and this is more evident in China as they have been known to censor most foreign and local content if they do not meet they're high censorship standards. An example of this can be seen when Friends a show released by Bright/Kauffman/Crane Productions (which is in association with Warner Bros. Television.) in 1994 and was originally aired by NBC, which was then aired in China for the 2nd time by Youku a Chinese streaming platform, but this time they would heavily censor it to the point where it's barely recognizable from the original, this type of censorship could lead to massive amounts of misinformation and could lead people to do illegal things such as pirating it just to see the uncensored version, in addition to censoring some dirty jokes from Friends they also censor LGBTQ...

Media regulation US law section 230

Image
Media regulation 230 Important court rulings on Section 230 have held that users and services cannot be sued for forwarding email, hosting online reviews, or sharing photos or videos that others find objectionable. It also helps to quickly resolve lawsuits cases that have no legal basis.  On of the big names in the social media world is YouTube, an it has been around since 2005, which means that they have a lot of time to write their rules and regulation they mostly try to develop a bot to do the regulation for them as they do not have the time or people to go and inspect every single video on the platform so instead of that they have a bot that would filter out the more sensitive videos from the normal ones so that they are easier to manage. But the bot isn't perfect and can lead to misunderstanding when it comes to regulating videos YouTube has regulation, with a few of them being their Suicide and harm policies where it states that "we do not allow content on YouTube that p...

OFCOM

Image
OFCOM The Office of Communications, also known as OFCOM, is the United Kingdom's government-approved regulatory and competition authority for the broadcasting, telecommunications, and postal industries.  OFCOM has broad authority over the television, radio, telecommunications, and postal sectors.  OFCOM plays an important role in the realm of TV broadcasting as OFCOM prevents some sensitive content such as swearing, sex, drugs, etc. out of live TV by filtering them out. There is also a watershed period from 05.30 A.M to 09:00 P.M where no sensitive content can be aired to children as according to research these are the times where children watch TV more frequently. OFCOM cannot censor TV programs or shows before it's release, but when it is already aired then they can censor it. But the TV shows can only be censored by audience requests via the OFCOM complaint center where they would read their complaints with care and will censor or fine whatever TV show they complaine...

Moral Panic

Image
Moral Panic 1. Concern: An event that sparks social anxiety 2. Hostility: A subcommunity will be targeted by the media for "causing" problems which would be deliberately  be blamed until they are cancelled. they are also called "Folk Devils". 3. Consensus It happens simultaneously with hostility, in this instance the event would completely take over the narrative and would be everywhere around the news. 4.Disproportionality The event would be greatly exaggerated by the media to make it seem more dangerous than it needs to be, to tell people to fear it and stay away from it. This also used to make people ignore the real life problems such as inflation. 5.Volatility The change would be made in society and it would slowly fade away. Case Study: Andrew Tate Former professional kickboxer and internet sensation  Emory  Andrew Tate III is American-British. After retiring from kickboxing, Tate started selling paid memberships and courses on his website, and he later becam...

Personal Identity

Image
PERSONAL IDENTITY David Gauntlett - Identity Theory According to David Gauntlett's theory of Personal Identity a person's identity is determined by their environment and that they only gained some of their current identity from media. It is also said in his theory that there are 4 factors in his theory that feed in to the personality choosing factor which is Fluidity, Constructed, Negotiated and Collective. Fluidity: People don't have fixed identity that is permanent  Constructed: The mass media constructs identities in the representation it offers us. These representations have a subtle influence on audience. Negotiated: How do we negotiate the various influences (real vs reel persona). Collective: Fandoms, or the sense of belonging to a sector of a media audience, group identity. (Personal relationships U&G). 1. We get SOME of our identity from the media 2. Post colonialism

Image
Paul Gilroy Post colonialism is the way that history affected media and it's representation on a spesific group of people. This is due to colonization ending by the time World War II ended which affected the influence  of the European countries, this would then lead to them portraying themselves as the good guys while simultaneously praying on the "others" and portraying them as evil savages to increase their influence over the media. Case study practice: 'The media condition the way we think' To what extent do you agree with this statement? Due to technological convergence we tend to spend more time in the media consuming it's contents, and because of technological convergence we can do this much easier due to the existence of the internet and streaming platforms for a much cheaper price. This leads into the next part of the essay which will talk about the human belief and how easy they are changed or reinforced by the media. An example of this can be seen in...

Advert analysis 3

Image
Mentos advertisement This mentos advertisement was made on the 14th of February 2014 and it was about the new mentos breeze. The advert shows how the chewing candy feels, it feels like wind blowing on you thus the name breeze. Media language The advert shows that the chewing candy feels like a breeze of fresh air in your mouth by deliberately twisting over an otherwise normal romantic scene by overkilling the amount of air that came out of the bottle, it adds a sense of comedy to the advert whilst also showing the effects (not actual effect just how it feels in your mouth and how it effects your breath)   of the chewing candy. Representation There are 3 actors in this advert a white man, a white woman and a mail man. The white man is your typical white man who lives in a clean and pristine apartment in the city while the white woman lives in a equally pristine house in a completely different neighborhood and there was also your typical mail man there or m...
